The Poet X

Whose point of view is this novel expressing? What point of view is missing? How might this story be different from a different point of view?

Xiomara Batista is the narrator of this story. The novel is written in 1st person as a series of poems that tie with each other as she narrators her complicated life. She is Afro-Latina and comes from a strong Catholic family although she is unsure about her own faith. She is also conflicted with her gender and racial identity as well.

Since the novel/poems are written from Xiomara we are seeing her life through her eyes. She is also a teenager with complicated feelings. I think the story would be interesting if it was written in Xiomara mother's perspective since she talks about her all the time. Her mom has a huge influence in her life although she tries to pull away from her mom. Xiomara's is strongly to her faith and wants her mother to emulate it. She even wrote a poem as if it was her mother's point of view, however it is still not her mother's story. If her mother wrote her story it would interesting seeing how she became the woman that is today and why her faith so essential to her. Also, the story would change because we would see how she views her daughter's lack of faith and may contribute to her surroundings rather than her daughter just trying to understand where she fits in with her faith.
